Temple was founded by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1881 and named for the railroad's chief engineer. The railroad also started the city's medical identity: a railway hospital opened in 1891, and the doctors who worked there went on to found what became Scott & White, now Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple. Today Temple is a medical and distribution city in Bell County, about 34 miles south of Waco along I-35.

Bell County's rural edges are grassland and cropland, and dry, windy stretches can bring grass fires close to homes on the outskirts of Temple, Belton and Troy.
